Attractions
Porto Vecchio has a lot of things to offer. There are many landmarks around town that demand at least a visit. One of the main attractions is the town hall as well as the famous Chiappa Lighthouse, one of the 5 lighthouses built in the 19th century to make sailing around the island much safer.
Town Hall
The town hall is of utmost importance in this small town, because it is a chance for the people of the community and the island of Corsica to show their identity through architecture. Although today the island is part of France, it hasn’t always been that way and throughout the centuries many others have claimed the island as their own, as well as there being a strong independence movement. The town hall celebrates this diversity and history in using traditional Corsican processes and making a very unusual building.
La Tour Genoise
A square shaped tower, built in the 16th century. Fully restored, its upper terrace offers a superb view of the entire site. An exhibition on the fortifications of the Corsican shores is on show inside the Tower.
Porte Genoise
The port frames a delightful expanse of sea and salt pans and through which you’ll find the quickest route down to the modern marina. There are also some fantastic beaches in the area, which due to the gulf benefit from calm waters.
Chiappa Lighthouse
The Chiappa lighthouse also called the Porto Vecchio lighthouse is located on the edge of Chiappa Point, south-east of the Gulf of Porto-Vecchio. It signals the approach of the Straits of Bonifacio farther to the south.
