La Chiappa Lighthouse
The lighthouse is located on Chiappa Point, the south side of the entrance to the Gulf of Porto-Vecchio, at the end of Route du Phare about 5 km northeast of Piccuvaghjia. The site is always open, however the lighthouse tower is closed to the public.
History
In 1838 it was decided that 5 modern lighthouses (at the time) would be built to girdle the island. Work began in 1839 and the lighthouse was lit in 1845 with a fixed white light with long bursts every 4 minutes. This lamp was replaced in 1910 by one with a red sector that eclipsed every 4 seconds.
Characteristics
The lighthouse is a 21 m square cylindrical masonry tower with a lantern and gallery, rising from the center of a square 1-story masonry keeper’s house. The lighthouse is made of unpainted light gray stone, with the lantern and gallery painted red. The lantern produces four white flashes every 15 seconds with a range of 37 km. This is the landfall light for Porto Vecchio.
